I never quite know how to start these blog posts so I’ll just jump right into it…
I finally got my sign up on the 23rd and it looks good! I’m probably going to have to fix a couple issues (the outside floodlight is too close to the sign for instance) but that’ll have to be completed some time in the future. Right now I’m going to check off that project on the to-do list. Next on the list is to paint a bit inside HQ and try to free up some funds to pay for taxes.
Last week I went to the Casbah with Travis to see “Tobacco” which was a lot of fun. I was pretty shocked to see how many people stayed for the opening-act DJ but left when Tobacco got on stage. Maybe it was because of the friendly asian mask one of the band members was wearing… some people get uncomfortable when they can’t see your eyes. O.O
Yesterday was the Reefpig’s (my dad’s new 30′ Catalina) maiden voyage. There are still a few kinks to work out (and I WOULD feel safer if we had a motor) but I think it’ll be a lot of fun to sail this summer. I really want to sail out to the tip of Point Loma and go surfing at Ralph’s. Perhaps I should make that a goal for this summer.
Welp, that’s probably enough for now. I ought to be getting back to work. Later.
I took the day off yesterday for President’s Day and it was wonderful. I took a couple walks, went on a drive with MJ, had a beer and played a game of pool at Aero Club, listened to some music at HQ, and that was it. Very relaxing. : ))
Work is coming along with my sign. So far Bill and I have built the frame for the sign, did a little wiring for the lighting and drilled a hole through the wall where the outside light will be placed. I need a couple more pieces of hardware from Home Depot and then we should be ready to finally complete this project! It probably should have been done by now but Bill’s and my schedule don’t mesh perfectly. I’m hopeful that by the end of this week the sign will be up and HQ will finally look like a legit business from the street.
On Saturday I went over to my Ma’s with MJ after work. We played pool, drank some champagne, ate tons of food and talked politics. Great fun! A big thank you to Ray and my Mom for such a great time.
It’s been raining like crazy this week and it doesn’t help that HQ has a ton of leaky pipes. I have no less than nine pots, pans, bowls and buckets set up under the various exposed pipe around here. My landlady just got all the fittings to fix the leaks but wasn’t able to coordinate a “no water day” with the tenants upstairs. So pots and buckets will have to do for now.
Earlier this week I designed and ordered a True Sharp sign to go outside of HQ and I just got a phone call (literally seconds before beginning this paragraph) saying that is ready for pick-up. Exciting! I’ll be sure to post some pictures once I get it up.
Before Busby left for Nigeria he gave me two free tickets for Sonic Youth at the House of Blues. They were originally scheduled to play last September but had to cancel that show and reschedule for January 2010 (January = Busby out of the country). I ended up taking Jeff and we had a really good time. I didn’t think the opener sounded too great but Sonic Youth put on a really good show. Afterwards, Jeff and I started walking up India Street waiting for a taxi to drive by and ended up walking all the way from HOB to HQ w/o a single taxi! The walk was nice, though. Thanks, Busby, for the tickets!!
This past weekend was my first “kegger”! Nick arranged the whole thing and surprised me with it at his house. Did you know that Keystone Light costs $4/keg more than Natty Light? Neither did I but it’s nice to know they aren’t skimping on quality control. Thanks again, Nick!
Just got back from Bangin’ Burgers (a place I sharpen for with my Restaurant Knife Exchange) for their Beer Week special of $3 pints of Stone. After you purchase one pint of Stone for $6, you get to keep the glass and get any additional Stone drinks for $3. Pretty sweet deal! The food was really tasty (I had the chilly cheese hot dog, some fried cheese nuggets, and cajon fries with garlic), the beer was great, and the pool tables weren’t against a wall. What more could you want? If you want to watch to get some grub while watching a Chargers game, this is a great place to do it.
True Sharp
Work on True Sharp Headquarters has been coming along. I have just about all of my personal belongings here and this week I should get the rest of my equipment moved in as well. The last piece of big furniture/equipment should be my workbench which will hopefully be delivered tomorrow from my Pa. After that, just a couple more pieces need to be moved in (with help from my Ma and maybe a couple more friends) and then this place should be fully operational! I’ll post pics once they’re all taken. : ))
I had people over on Friday night and everybody seemed really stoked on the place. I can’t wait till I get everything moved in and situated how I want it so that I can have an epic housewarming party. (Aero Club & Lucha Libre mandatory.)
I’m really excited for the holiday season but at the same time I’m already so busy that I don’t know how much more I can handle without important things falling through the cracks. I have a new store starting this Friday (located in Dana Point!), the new workshop, additional bills, etc. etc. I’m kinda looking forward to – and dreading – the winter lull.
Just got back from a fun Friday night at the Beauty Bar! Jeff invited me to a show his work was sponsoring and I’m glad I went. Listening to live music, chillin’ with Jeff, Robert and Midori, drinkin’ the Beauty Bar’s own brew – this was a good Friday night.
